An amelioration of the criminal code was discountenanced because a search in the parish register of an obscure village proved that the proposer had not been born in wedlock. But who are the people? Doubtless you may encounter some opinions with which you may not agree, and some conclusions the accuracy of which you may find cause to question.

Is he to have a vote? Don’t dress it up as a truly tedious novel. Mysterious phrases heard in his earliest boyhood, unnoticed then, long since forgotten, rose to his ear. But it is nice to find a character like Sidonia who is a very positive portrait of a Jew.

He who uttered these words was a man of middle size and age, originally in all probability of a spare habit, but now a little inclined to corpulency. I understand my tailor has turned Liberal, and is going to stand for one of the metropolitan districts, a friend of Lord Durham; perhaps I shall find him in it when I return.

At one point, he has several characters arguing about the Bedchamber Crisis — the last coningbsy when a British monarch asserted personal prerogatives against the will of the prime minister. Not because you saved my life, though that is a great thing, but because before that I would have done anything for you; only, for the cause above mentioned, I would not show it. Coningsby, or, The New Generation

The success of the Reform Ministry on their first appeal to the new constituency which they had created, had been fatally complete. Now and then there was a passage which aimed at a higher flight, and nothing can be conceived more unlike genuine feeling, or more offensive to pure taste.

In his comprehensive travels, Sidonia had visited and examined the Hebrew communities of the world. Madame Colonna was not witty, but she had that sweet Roman frankness which is so charming. Loses nothing of its power as literature, in spite of the dated style and language used. disraeil
