An author I rodshalde heard of but never read. I adored both of them. We are left with him resolving to learn from the mistakes of his present life, making sure not to repeat them in the next one.

His best known works include SteppenwolfSiddharthaand The Glass Bead Game also known as Magister Ludi which explore an individual’s search for spirituality outside society. No trivia or quizzes yet.

Considering his reputation as a proponent of Eastern philosophy, perhaps Johann Veraguth, in rosshaldw to remain with his family, counters the teachings to amputate worldy attachments from one’s life not only for the sake of his spiritual freedom, but for the liberation of those worldly attachments as well.

Its theme reminds me somewhat of some of Henry James’s fiction: May 13, Blanca rated it really liked it. Then the balance shifted. In his time, Hesse was a popular and influential author in the German-speaking world; worldwide fame only came later. Hermannn sublimates his life into bermann intellectualism and his art.

The elder son moved away for college, and their younger son, Pierre, lives with them on their estate, Rosshalde. It’s pretty much a family study during their last summer of still being or rather pretending to be a family.

It’s a novel about realisation and loss, a novel about lies we tell ourselves and illusions of happiness we create.
