The journey of the vice-laden ingenue is replete with innumerable sexual encounters which often do not refrain from crudity or vulgarity. Therefore, it is the reader who makes a text ‘boring’ not the text alone. Sade the philosopher is in force, and his treatises – like his other novels delivered by key characters – are interspersed with the sex and violence one expects. The libertines derive as much satisfaction from defeating their opponents intellectually as they do from subduing and abusing them physically, while the victims jklieta and Justine offers the best example of this rise admirably to the challenge with equally forceful and reasoned replies. Not recommended for the religiously inclined.

I confess that in the begining I almost quit reading it, but now I’m glad I’ve read it, and will read more books from Sade.

I love The Marquis. She meets the ferocious Clairwil, whose main passion is in murdering young men and boys as revenge for the man’s brutality to her sex. Fortunately, it began on page and gave me my second wind with this book.
